Universities Next to Join the Telepresence Trend

by Bethaney Wallace

With the ever-growing capabilities of telepresence taking over the world – think about it, cell phones, meetings, nursing homes, the government – it is no surprise that one more entity is jumping on the bandwagon. But this time, it's educational. Colleges and universities, although have been offering online classes for years, are now taking virtual learning to a whole new level. Instead of pupils “attending” classes in their pjs while lounging on the couch, they can actually see the person who is teaching them. Professors can look their students in the eyes, and communication can be made by talking rather than typing.

Although distance learning has been going on for quite some time, the technology was somewhat limited. Contact was contained to email and never face-to-face. However, with the use of telecommunication and telepresence, questions can be instantly answered, and any discrepancies can be immediately resolved. Universities are also finding that implementing telepresence has saved on relocation costs. For example, if a professor is from out of state (or even out of country) he or she can remain their residence and simply work through the technology. Schools are also receiving grants and donations to install the equipment, saving them even further funds.

How Does it Work?

Telepresence classes can be attended by students just like any other class. However, instead of a professor standing at the front of the room, it is updated monitors, cameras, and speakers. Students and the professors can still interact, share information, and discuss. For many, telepresence is actually preferred as notes can be displayed on multiple screens, which is easier for a large audience to see. Students are also given more choices in courses as professors do not have to be present, or even work for a specific university full time.

As telepresence continues to advance, it only be fitting that its uses and availability grow as well. To find out more about telepresence or any other of your AV needs, click on the contact tab above.
